CHARLESTON, S.C. -- The nonprofit organization trying to preserve a 134-year-old lighthouse near South Carolina's Charleston Harbor says it has hired a construction company that will build new pilings under the structure.
The Post and Courier of Charleston reported Sunday that Palmetto Gunite Construction of Ravenel will build 70 to 80 concrete pilings about 8 inches in diameter, under the red-and-white-striped Morris Island Lighthouse.
The lighthouse was built on wood pilings that have been exposed to sea worms that are eating the wood out from under the lighthouse that now sits in the ocean.
In 2008, the nonprofit Save the Light organization built a coffer dam to help stabilize the listing tower.
The latest work will cost $1.9 million and should be done by Sept. 1.
