CHARLESTON, S.C. -- A noted preservationist is spending a night in an old slave cabin on the South Carolina coast.
Joseph McGill spends Saturday night in a cabin at Magnolia Plantation and Gardens outside Charleston.
McGill is a program officer with the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Staying in the cabin is part of his research on remaining slave cabins.
Ten years ago he spent the night in a cabin at Boone Hall Plantation in Mount Pleasant. That experience was part of a documentary that aired on the History Channel.
McGill is making videos, photographs and keeping a diary of his experiences at Magnolia.
Last year, Magnolia Plantation opened four former slave cabins that restored to show visitors the path of blacks from slavery to freedom.
