Only a tank of gas, a short drive and seven dollars stands between you and a day of basking in the sun. One of the joys of living in the Columbia area is that we are about two hours from anywhere. In these days of stay-cations, (or no-cations) there are some great options out there so we can get our fix of wanderlust even under the present economic circumstances.
My girls and I recently traveled to the lowcountry. The Isle of Palms is a wonderful area that has retained the charm of the beach trips of our childhood. There is a “main drag†with just the right amount of beach shops, snack stands and local flavor. These few blocks are a wonderful break after a few hours on the pristine beaches that remain relatively uncrowded during the week. For only seven dollars a day you can park at the Isle of Palms County Park. The facilities are outstanding. There are restrooms, drink machines, sometime snack and beach item for purchase, out door showers, changing rooms, playgrounds, as well as, a volley ball area, grills and picnic tables. Everything is well kept and quiet beautiful. The beach has lifeguards on duty while the park is open and the pier is close by for shade without lugging those umbrellas. You can make it as thrifty a day as you like by packing a cooler with lunch and snacks or head down the beach and hit the snack stands or a beachy restaurant. With summer days dwindling, take advantage of what our state has to offer. After a day in the sun, you can be home in a few hours and have the comfort of your own sweet bed!
