CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - In its 10th year of operation, the South Carolina Aquarium is finally debt free.
The Post and Courier of Charleston reported Friday that aquarium officials announced the $12 million debt remaining from the aquarium opening in 2000 has been retired.
Mayor Joseph P. Riley Jr. shepherded the $69 million project for 16 years before it opened. He says having the debt was like hiking with a 50-pound backpack.
Officials say the debt from the aquarium on Charleston Harbor was paid off through business operations and foundation grants.
