CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - The Medical University of South Carolina is appointing the first female to head its College of Medicine.

Dr. Etta Pisano's appointment as dean will be considered by the board of trustees of the Charleston school on April 9. She will become 1 of only about a dozen women who are deans of medical schools in the nation.

Pisano replaces Dr. Jerry Reves, who is stepping down on June 30 after nine years as dean of the medical school.
