FOLLY BEACH, S.C. -- The mayor of one South Carolina coastal city says officials may rethink allowing alcohol on the beach, after the Fourth of July weekend left Folly Beach looking like a frat house after an all-night party.

The Post and Courier of Charleston reports piles of beer cans, bottles, cups, abandoned coolers and towels were collected Monday.

Mayor Carl Beckmann Jr., estimated 40,000 people visited the beach during the weekend and says he was shocked by the amount of beer cups and cans. Folly is the only beach in the Charleston area allowing alcohol on the beach.

Beckmann doesn't think locals would be so disrespectful and says the trash must have been left by out-of-towners who, he said, "have no regard for anybody other than themselves."
