CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - Tourism leaders say the eyes of the world will be on South Carolina when the state commemorates the 150th anniversary of the start of the Civil War, and that the observance will provide an economic boost.

Seven members of the Charleston County legislative delegation shared a boat with about 70 other people Monday and went to Fort Sumter, where the first shots of the war were fired in April 1861.

Executive director Helen Hill of the Charleston Area Convention and Visitors Bureau says history is the No. 1 reason visitors come to Charleston and that certainly will be true next year.

Events range from lectures to a planned commemoration of the first shots of the war.
